Friends,
We are wrapping up January so it is a good time to get honest about how we did with those New Year’s Resolutions. Didn’t make one? Stick with me anyway because there probably is still something in your life you are trying to take up a notch.
For me: I want to move away from spending hours sitting at a desk doing a deep dive into work. Specifically I want to get outside more during daylight hours when it is nice out.
It has not been going well. Since moving to Florida the weather has been meh at best. I can’t complain too much because my friends in NYC have had a brutal time with the weather. But still. I’ve been inside a lot considering I moved in part to escape the cold. I also get so involved in what I’m doing I forget to look up and maybe take a break outside…or even work outside now that I can.
Today the sun is shining, and guess what I have in my backyard where I’m finally able to work? The adorable pink flamingo pool float Ashley bought for us. Or should I say bought to take adorable pictures of her dog Walnut the Maltese.
The good news is that when they went home they left “Pinky,” so now every time I look out the window and see the sun shining on it, I know it is time to pull out the portable desk and move to the “outside office” aka poolside.
Key takeaway: getting outside your normal work space (and sometimes literally outside) can be a great boost to your mental health and overall wellness.
During a recent work deep dive, this story about employee hopes and fears caught my eye. It reinforces all the staggering data I'm seeing lately about workers' financial health.
Which brings me to my passion for helping people lighten the load when it comes to money stress.
Today is the last day of Financial Wellness Month and, if you follow Financial Wellness Strategies on LinkedIn, you’ve seen us posting about the impact of financial stress. That’s because the latest numbers show employee financial wellness is continuing to GET WORSE.
That’s not a good sign for productivity, engagement, mental health—or the bottom line. If you are the employee, this distraction can do serious damage to your performance reviews. If you are the boss, you aren’t getting the best from your team.
The numbers tell the story:
-Nearly four out of five workers (78%) report that their finances cause them anxiety — a seven percentage point increase from 2022.
-This has affected not only their mental health, but also their jobs, with more than half (58%) noting that financial anxiety is making it difficult for them to focus at work.
-95% of workers said in a recent study that it was important that their employer provides financial wellness benefits.
-70% say financial wellness benefits are more important to them now than they were a year ago.
-72% of workers say that better financial wellness benefits would reduce the chance that they consider “quiet quitting” in the future.
