Dear Friends,
I published a post earlier today on my LinkedIn page asking about why I’ve suddenly been getting a lot of inquiries from my journalist friends about the rise in popularity of “Buy Nothing” groups which have been around for a very long time. So why now?
I shared my take in this story reported by WNYW Fox 5 NYC:
I also did got some good feedback in the comments section of my Linkedin post.
“A riff on "dry January"....conscious underspending is having a moment.”
“Minimalism is in!”
“It’s a lovely way to build community and give a second life to things.”
“I agree that this trend is growing. I remember doing segments on this topic last January and thinking that it was a great alternative to rampant consumerism”
and who doesn’t love to “Shop your own closet!”
I also got a spot-on counter point that we should also give some thought to as well:
“Buy nothing” brings another set of problems though. Companies miss numbers, layoffs etc. I think everything in moderation nothing on extreme is the answer”
I for one have always been obsessed WITH our obsession with stuff.
Case in point: The Hermes Birkin bag vs. the Walmart Wirkin bag.
ICYMI: Walmart released a dupe of the classes Hermés priced at $79. It quickly sold out so I can’t share a link but if you want more details here is a review. It won’t fool anyone. The Wirkin is made out of faux leather and has a polyester lining. But if you want that look, it works!
It sold out fast and here’s the crazy thing.
Now it looks like Wal-Mart is selling pre-owned bags for sky high prices. I guess a bargain is all relative.
